Breast Implants: Why You Shouldn’t Pay More for a Bigger Cup Size

Before you go into a consultation for a breast augmentation with your plastic surgeon, you should prepare yourself with a number of questions about the procedure. You can’t know everything ahead of time, and the purpose of the consultation is to learn everything you need to know to make an informed decision. But here is a question we think you shouldn’t have to ask your plastic surgeon: Will you charge more for breast implants with a bigger cup size?

Ask Your Plastic Surgeon Questions About Your Procedure

Throughout over twenty years of providing plastic surgery to Nashville patients, Dr. Rosdeutscher of NuBody Concepts has learned a thing or two from his patients. From the countless hours he has spent engaging with patients and listening to their concerns, he knows one thing for sure: Women – and men – choosing to have cosmetic surgery do not like to be told what they should do.

If you are considering getting breast implants or another type of plastic surgery, you may be in the early stage still gathering basic information about your procedure. Or you may be ready to book a consultation with one or more plastic surgeons to learn more about the surgery and to determine which surgeon is a good fit. As you prepare for such a consultation, you’ll make a list of questions. What type of anesthesia does this office use? How long will the recovery last? Which activities should you abstain from during the recovery?

Know How to Read Your Price Quote

But it’s not always easy to know which question to ask. Some questions simply may not occur to you. This can be an issue when you ask about the price of your procedure. Most of us would assume, when quoted on a breast augmentation, that the price you are quoted is all-inclusive. If Plastic Surgeon A quotes you $3,900 for implants, and Plastic Surgeon B quotes you $4,500, you will probably lean towards Plastic Surgeon A. You might be in for disappointment when asked to pay your final bill and see that Surgeon A has added another $1,500 to your “baseline” price for surgeon fees, anesthesia, and taxes. That brings up your total cost to $5,400. Surgeon B instead always quotes all-inclusive prices. Had you gone with Surgeon B, you would have saved $900.

But that’s not all. Did you know that many plastic surgeons charge a different price depending on the size of the treated area? A liposuction might cost you twice as much as what you saw quoted in a RealSelf review, for instance. If your weight or BMI is higher than that person’s, you might be charged double or even more from what you thought it would cost.

How Much are Size D Breast Implants?

The same is true for breast augmentations. Some surgeons base their breast augmentation prices on the cup size you are choosing. If you see your future self with a double D cup, then you may pay a higher price than the patient looking for a more modest boost to a B cup. This simply doesn’t make much sense. How will you know that this doesn’t create a false incentive for the surgeon to “suggest” a bigger cup size than might be advisable? Again, a good plastic surgeon listens to his or her patients and makes sure their wishes and goals are respected. Given his experience, he might consult for a bigger or smaller size, knowing what similar surgeries have looked like in previous patients. But there should never be any doubt whether he has his own interest in mind when helping you customize your procedure.

Granted, not all breast surgeries are alike. One may last longer and the other might be quicker. Also, different types of implants need a different type of technique. In some cases, it’s advisable to put the breast implant under the muscle, while in other cases above-the-muscle implants are preferred. And there are actual price differences between implant materials, namely silicone vs saline. But at NuBody Concepts, we simply believe in being upfront with our patients. We quote you an all-inclusive price, and that is all you’ll have to pay, period. Whichever cup size makes you happy, we won’t charge you extra for it.
