The 45-year old male patient had had a previous surgery 20 years ago and wanted to address the remaining stubborn fat pocket around the belly button (it is particularly visible in the pre-op side view) with a tummy tuck. Technically, the surgery performed by Dr. Mark Peters was a dermatolipectomy. A tummy tuck treats both the muscle separation above and below the belly button and excessive or loose skin in the belly, meaning it is really two operations, a muscle repair and a skin excision. The skin excision part is called a dermatolipectomy. For male patients that is often all that is needed, whereas female patients who have undergone pregnancy and childbirth often incur muscle damage that can only be addressed with a full tummy tuck. Note: At this time the patient's scar is only midway to maturity; by continuing to apply the silicone scar gel provided to patients for post-op care, it will continue to fade over the next 6 months.
