One of the most common side effects of aging for both men and women is hair loss. Whether it’s due to genetics, lifestyle choices, or simply the body showing signs of aging, hair loss is an extremely common issue. However, thanks to incredible advancements in the field of medicine, both men and women have access to hair loss solutions beyond hair pieces or invasive surgeries.
Hair Transplant Solutions Have Never Been Better
Originally, hair transplants were quite an involved procedure for which a strip of hair was moved from one part of your head to another. Commonly called the “strip” method, this process is called follicular unit transplantation (FUT). A newer and less invasive process is known as follicular unit extraction (FUE). Learn more about this new type of procedure and how it varies from the more traditional method.
What Was the Downside of FUT?
In a FUT procedure, a strip of skin is removed from the back of the head where the hair is thick and where there is healthy follicle growth. From this strip, donor hair follicles are harvested by a skilled physician and individually transplanted to the proper area on the scalp. The donor area is then stitched together, leaving a linear scar. Due to the more invasive nature of the skin graft, many patients were turned off by the procedure, especially with regards to pain and possible swelling and scarring. Fortunately, this prompted the development of a more ‘user friendly’ hair transplant procedure.
How Does FUE Work?
As the name implies, this method of transplantation extracts hair follicle units individually from the scalp without the need to remove any skin. Without skin grafting, FUE procedures can be completed within a single day. The extraction of hair leaves a number of very small dots that heal within a few days without leaving any scars. This is a big deal because without a scar patients can wear their hair at any length once the natural growth continues. Finally, FUE hair transplants have a shorter recovery time than FUT hair transplants. The German-engineered NeoGraft machine used by our surgeons and technicians is FDA approved and allows for maximum precision, meaning the incisions needed to extract and reinsert the follicles are kept to a minimum. Most patients are fully healed within a week of an FUE transplant. However, you are able to get back to your daily activities within 24-48 hours of the procedure.
