What to Expect From Your Hair Transplant Procedure

Whether due to genetics, age, or environmental factors, many of us will experience hair loss at some point in our lives. For those of you who have experienced significant hair loss, you know just how frustrating or embarrassing it can be. If this applies to you, it’s time that you find an effective solution to your hair loss.

The modern hair transplant method, follicular unit extraction (FUE) can help you grow not only your hair, but your confidence as well. Before you schedule an appointment, here’s an overview of the FUE hair transplant to give you a better idea of what to expect.

Preparing for Your Hair Transplant

Your journey to better hair starts with a consultation. In this meeting, you and your surgeon or medical consultant will discuss your concerns and goals. These may vary based on where on your head you’d like more hair and how thick you’d like it to be. During this time, you’ll also learn more about what to expect during and after the procedure.

Leading up to your scheduled appointment, you’ll want to be sure to avoid excessive sun exposure on your scalp. You also may be instructed to avoid or limit your alcohol or nicotine use in the weeks prior to speed up your healing process.

The Day of Your Hair Transplant

When you arrive for your appointment, you’ll be prepped for the procedure and made to feel comfortable. Your scalp will be cleaned and numbed with local anesthesia. Next, the donor area will be shaved so that your hair follicles can be removed one at a time. From there, the hair follicles are transplanted into the receiving areas using pneumatic pressure (compressed air pressure).

1-3 Weeks Post-Op*

A few weeks after your hair transplant, your new grafted hair follicles will start to go into a resting phase. You won’t notice any drastic changes during this time, so it’s important to be patient. Your hair will be preparing itself for major growth to come!

3-4 Months Post-Op*

A few months after the hair transplant, you should start noticing a decent amount of hair growth. Your scalp may still be healing during this time.

6-8 Months Post-Op*

At this point, you should notice the biggest improvement in your hair and appearance. While your hair won’t be at its thickest, it should be noticeably fuller and longer. Don’t be surprised when the compliments start rolling in! By this time, you should be able to cut and style your hair like you were never able to before.

1 Year Post-Op*

Within about a year of your hair transplant, the transplanted follicles will have reached maturity. While you may have to have patience in the process, the results will be so worth it, as you’ll get to enjoy a full head of your own natural hair.

*Results vary from patient to patient and are not guaranteed.
