Liposuction is both safe and effective when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon. Looking for a board-certified plastic surgeon is a good way to make sure he or she has the required expertise.
Any invasive surgery comes with certain risks. And liposuction – as opposed to a non-invasive cosmetic treatment such as BOTOX injections – is indeed considered a surgical procedure. However, the main risk during a surgical procedure comes from general anesthesia. The good news: liposuction can be performed without general anesthesia. Again, make sure you discuss anesthesia methods with your plastic surgeon during a personal consultation. At NuBody Concepts, we customize your anesthesia to your personal preference, using a combination of IV Sedation and local anesthesia.
Does the Liposuction Technique Matter?
When researching fat removal, it is important to understand the differences between liposuction methods.
Tumescent liposuction is the gold standard of liposuction. The fat is removed using of a gently pulsating stream of water that breaks up fat cells under your skin. The advantage of this water-based liposuction is that it causes less trauma than other methods, less post-op swelling, and a more even removal of fat. It is virtually pain-free since the anesthetic is added to the water jet used to flush out the fat.
If you have excess fat and stubborn fat deposits that don’t respond to diet or exercise, a tumescent liposuction method such as Aqualipo is an excellent choice.
But the best liposuction results are achieved by applying a combination of techniques. Laser liposuction all by itself might not give you the dramatic before-and-after effects you’re looking for, but it is very effective when applied after tumescent liposuction. With SmartLipo or SlimLipo, two different laser liposuction techniques, your plastic surgeon can touch up on smaller deposits of fat and tighten the skin. Similar results can be achieved with radio frequency (RF) or ultrasound techniques.
Ok, so Liposuction is Safe. How About the Results – Are They Permanent?
Any fat cells removed with liposuction cannot come back. In that way, your liposuction results are permanent. However, this doesn’t mean you’re safe from ever building up fat again. Fat cells near the targeted areas can grow if you gain weight. To maintain the results after liposuction, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, meaning a healthy diet and regular exercise.
Everyone who has tried to lose weight knows how hard it is to stay motivated. If you don’t see much of a result, you are prone to throw in the towel. Liposuction gives you that extra boost of motivation. You see the drastic results after your procedure, you feel great about your body for perhaps the first time in years, and you are that much more motivated to keep it that way. All you need to do is engage in reasonable weekly exercise and stay away from unhealthy eating habits.
Will I Have any Scars from Liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction is delivered via a stream of water that breaks up the fat cells under your skin. For this purpose, a wand with a very small cannula is inserted into the target areas. In our experience, these tiny incisions rarely cause any permanent scarring. However, they can cause temporary blemishes. The skin may be discolored in that area for some time after the procedure, and the actual incisions may take up to a year to heal.
A skilled surgeon will be able to greatly reduce the visibility of the incisions needed for liposuction. He or she can strategically place them where they are hard to spot. In this way, you will not have to worry, even if there are temporary markings that take some time to heal.
How Soon Will I See My Liposuction Results?
The beauty of liposuction versus other fat removal methods is that you walk away from your procedure with your fat immediately gone. Your surgeon will extract a liter or more of your fat from your body. You will not need any repeat treatments, nor will you have to wait for your fat to naturally disappear. This is not true for fat freezing or fat burning. These methods need a series of recurring treatments, and they show weaker results.
This doesn’t mean that you will see your best results right after your liposuction procedure. The reason you need to wait for your best results has to do with post-op swelling. This is just part of the process. The amount of swelling is different from patient to patient, and also from surgeon to surgeon, depending on what exact technique of combination of techniques he or she uses.
While the results at the conclusion of the surgery are generally very remarkable, you will need a little time for the swelling to subside. Liposuction can takes up to three months for most of the swelling to go away. At your first post-op checkup you will typically see great results. Take a look at the NuBody Concepts Before & After Gallery for some examples. They may get even better over the next three months, so that by six months after your procedure you will see your best long-term results.
