Labiaplasty is a type of vaginal rejuvenation procedure to reduce the size of the external labia minora (the inner lip in the female genitalia). The procedure is not be confused with a vaginoplasty, which is performed to tighten or help strengthen the internal vaginal wall.
In recent years, vaginal rejuvenation—specifically, labiaplasty—has become much more popular and accepted among women of all ages. This is partially due to grooming trends, as the lack of hair tends to highlight the size and shape of the genitals. Other factors include the increase in awareness of the procedure and an increase in acceptance of talking about genital-related preferences.
There are many reasons why a woman would want to undergo a labiaplasty. A labiaplasty may be done for any of the following reasons:
You may be an ideal candidate for a labiaplasty if you are in good health, have a sound self-image, and are choosing to undergo the procedure of your own accord. As with any plastic surgery, we ask that you have normal expectations for the procedure and its results.
During a consultation, we’ll discuss your aesthetic goals in addition to the expected outcome, risks, and benefits. We’ll also work with you to customize the procedure to help you achieve your aesthetic goals.
There are a number of effective techniques for a labiaplasty—including linear trim, wedge resection, W-plasty, or extended wedge. During a consultation, we’ll determine which technique to use, based on your individual anatomy and desired result.
While the labiaplasty can be performed under general anesthesia, we prefer the combination of IV sedation (twilight) and localized anesthesia. Our plastic surgeon uses this technique to prevent complications, while reducing recovery times and costs.
Recovery time can vary depending on your body and the extent of the labiaplasty; however, in general, most women will have soreness and discomfort for 3-5 days, which will be managed with pain medication and topical numbing spray. By that time you should be able to return to normal everyday activity. There are no sutures to be removed.
We ask you not to wear tight-fitting clothing for a week or so or until your body tells you that it’s comfortable to do so. The key is listening to your body, especially when returning to exercise and intercourse. Most patients can have intercourse pain free around 2-4 weeks.
